3 Steps To Getting What You Want
Step 2

by Chris Nelson-Jeffers

Step 2 – Know What You Want

To apply the energy and power within you constructively, you must know what it is that you want.

The more clearly you know what it is that you want, the better you are able to visualize it, the more likely you are going to be to achieve it.

Two Times Creation

Creation happens  twice, first in the mind (inception), and then again when the thing is created – or occurs – in reality (action).

For example, to obtain the knowledge in a book, first you must decide in your mind to read it. Then you engage in the second creation which is the physical action of reading the book. The result of this action is the knowledge contained into your book entering your mind and adding to your intellectual storehouse of knowledge and understanding.

Perhaps you want to build a house. Do you simply pick up a hammer and start nailing boards together?

Of course not.  First you will visualize in your mind what your house will look like, how many rooms it will have, where they will be located, what their function will be. You will visualize the color, and the roof lines. You will imagine your satisfaction of being warm and sheltered from the elements.

Because building a house is a plan that is more complicated than making a sandwich, you will draw out your house plans, calculating measurements to make sure everything fits together, determining the materials and tools you will need, and calculating the costs of acquiring what you will  need.

You may employ other people to do all of these things for you, but you will first form in your mind the idea of a house, and decide in your mind to act to build or obtain one.

Form a Clear Vision

This sounds like common sense, doesn’t it?

Yet, there are many intelligent, capable, and well-intentioned people out there, running around in their lives in all directions like the proverbial “chicken with its head cut off”, expending time, money and energy trying to build something, with only the foggiest idea of what that “something” is, what it will look like, and how they will build it.

This lack of clear vision is perhaps the biggest reason most people fail at what they say they are trying to do.

Reading this, you are at a particular point in your life. Probably you are feeling like one of the people above, running around in circles desperately seeking clarity and accomplishment in your life.

Whatever got you here is behind you. Stop spending so much time gazing into the rear view mirror pondering your mistakes and lost opportunities. Look forward at where you are wanting to go. Do you even have a map?

Take Stock

No matter what state you feel your life is in, the truth is that you have a lifetime so far of accumulated skills, knowledge, and understanding. Inventory what you have, and consider how you can put it to work.

Thomas Edison famously failed by his own estimates 10,000 times in trying to create the electric light bulb – trying different materials, filaments, enclosures, and assembly processes. Yet his mindset was that he hadn’t “failed” 10,000 times, he had simply identified the 10,000 way that creating artificial light from electricity wouldn’t work. That knowledge itself was an asset he used to guide his next effort.

Thomas Edison also considered giving up to be one of man’s greatest weaknesses. “The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time”.

What if Edison has given up on the light bulb after 9,999 failures? And the electric light bulb was not the only one of Edison’s developments and inventions.

From Experience Comes Wealth

One of the differences between those who are wealthy and those who are poor, is that the wealthy person has failed more often than the poor person has even tried.

Before you take another step, get real clear on what it is that you want. The clearer your vision, down to the minute details, the more completely you can plan and then act to acquire the necessary skills, resources, and materials., and the more constructive you can make every thought and action you undertake to achieve that goal.

Then ACT to create your vision in reality.
